The Assembly District 19 "Community First" Slate
We have 10 seats in Assembly District 19. I am running on a ten-person slate with other community minded people, three of whom are established community leaders and DCCC incumbents and 6 of whom are under 40 and running for the first time to create a new generation of leaders. We all have different areas of interest and expertise, but we have similar values, we are all believe in a grassroots and inclusive approach to politics, and we all want better for the our communities. *A Note On the Distribution of Seats:
Many people wonder why there are 10 seats for Assembly District 19 and 14 seats for Assembly District 17. The number of seats per district on the DCCC was reapportioned earlier this year. It was originally 12 and 12. There are DCCC members and candidates on the West Side, as well as forces downtown and in City Hall, who are begrudging this reapportionment as part of "the Progressive Agenda" to control the DCCC. As a progressive who lives on the West Side, I can tell you that this is completely unfounded. The fact is that there are considerably fewer registered Democrats in Assembly District 19 (42%) than there are in Assembly District 17 (58%). I don't support this reapportionment just because I am a progressive; on the contrary, losing two seats makes it more competitive to be elected, especially in a district where progressives are a minority. I support the reapportionment because I believe in fairness and representation based on dynamics with the confidence that it can be redistributed when the population is balanced once again. It will give us more incentive to register and hold onto more Democrats in our district, which is what the DCCC is supposed to be doing.
